Ceramic coating vs wax: what actually lasts

How long wax and ceramic coating really last in a Queensland summer, what each one protects against, and what ceramic coating costs in Brisbane.

Wax and ceramic coating both make paint glossy and help water bead off. The difference is how long they last and how much they actually protect. Wax lasts weeks. A ceramic coating lasts years. In Brisbane's heat and UV, that gap gets even wider.

What's the difference between wax and ceramic coating?

Wax is a soft layer of natural or synthetic wax that sits on top of your paint. It's easy to apply, looks good, and wears away quickly.

A ceramic coating is a liquid that bonds to your clear coat and cures into a hard, glass-like layer. We use the FIREBALL range, including ceramic graphene coatings. It's harder, more chemical resistant and far longer lasting than any wax. See our ceramic coatings.

How long does car wax last in Queensland?

Usually four to eight weeks, and often less in summer. Wax softens with heat, and dark paint in the Brisbane sun gets hot enough to speed that up. Every wash takes a little more off. To keep a car protected with wax, you're re-applying it every month or two.

How long does ceramic coating last?

It depends on the coating. Here's the FIREBALL range we apply in Brisbane:

FIREBALL coatingRated durabilityWarranty
Flash12 monthsNone
Shooter24 monthsNone
Wizard Professional5 years3 years
FX88 Professional7 years5 years
Eternity Professional10 years7 years

Durability assumes regular washing and the recommended aftercare. A coated car that's never washed won't reach its rating.

How much does ceramic coating cost in Brisbane?

At Prestige, FIREBALL ceramic coatings for cars start from $300 + GST (Flash, small car) up to $1,800 + GST (Eternity Professional, oversized vehicle). Preparation is separate: a wash and decontamination from $150 + GST, and paint correction from $400 + GST, depending on size and condition. Full prices by vehicle size are on our pricing page.

Wax looks cheaper per application. Over five years, though, you'll pay for 30 or more wax jobs, and your paint still won't have the protection a coating gives.

Is ceramic coating worth it in Brisbane?

  • Yes, if you plan to keep the car for a few years, park outdoors, or want washing to be quicker and easier.
  • Yes, if your car lives near the coast or under trees, where droppings, sap and salt are a constant.
  • Maybe not, if you're selling the car in the next few months. A good pre-sale detail may be better value.

Do you need paint correction before ceramic coating?

Yes. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it, swirls included. Every ceramic job starts with a decontamination wash and paint correction so the coating goes onto a clean, corrected surface.

What about Skygloss?

Skygloss isn't a wax or a ceramic. It's a 2K clear coat that builds your clear coat back up. If your clear coat is thin or worn, it's worth a look. Read Skygloss vs ceramic coating for the full comparison.

FAQ

Common questions

Is ceramic coating better than wax?

For durability and protection, yes. Wax lasts weeks. A ceramic coating lasts from one to ten years depending on the product, and resists UV, droppings and chemicals far better.

How much does ceramic coating cost in Brisbane?

At Prestige, FIREBALL ceramic coatings for cars range from $300 + GST to $1,800 + GST depending on the coating and vehicle size. Wash, decontamination and paint correction are priced separately.

Can you put wax over a ceramic coating?

You can, but there's no point. Wax sits on top and hides the coating's slickness and water beading. Use the topper recommended in your aftercare instead.

Does ceramic coating stop scratches and stone chips?

It resists light swirls and marring better than bare paint, but it won't stop stone chips or deep scratches. For chips, paint protection film is the right product.

How long does a ceramic coating take to apply?

Usually one to two days, including the wash, decontamination and paint correction beforehand. The exact time depends on the car's size and paint condition.
