A detail is only as good as the weeks after it. Brisbane is hard on paint: strong UV, summer storms, bat and bird droppings, and salt air if you live near the bay. A few simple habits keep the finish looking sharp for longer and make your next detail quicker and cheaper.
How often should you wash your car in Brisbane?
For a car that's driven daily, every one to two weeks is about right. Wash sooner after a storm, a drive along the coast at Redcliffe or Sandgate, or a weekend parked under trees.
Don't wait for the next wash to deal with bird and bat droppings. In a Queensland summer, a dark panel can get hot enough to bake them into the clear coat within a day. Soften them with a damp microfibre and quick detailer, then lift them off. Never scrub them dry.
How do you wash a car without scratching it?
Most swirl marks come from washing, not driving. The fix is technique, not more effort.
- Wash in the shade, early or late in the day. Brisbane sun dries water and shampoo onto the paint before you can rinse it, leaving spots.
- Pre-rinse properly. Get the loose grit off before anything touches the paint.
- Use two buckets. One with pH-neutral car shampoo, one with clean water to rinse your mitt. Grit guards in both keep dirt at the bottom.
- Work from the top down. The lower panels are the dirtiest, so do them last.
- Keep a separate mitt for wheels. Brake dust is abrasive and has no place on your paint.
- Dry with a clean microfibre drying towel or a blower. Pat or drag gently. Don't rub in circles.
What should you avoid between details?
- Automatic brush car washes. The brushes carry grit from every car before yours, and they're the most common cause of swirl marks we correct.
- Dish soap. It strips protection and dries out rubber and trim.
- Wiping a dusty car dry. A quick wipe with a dry cloth drags dust across the paint like fine sandpaper.
- Household glass cleaner on tinted windows. Many contain ammonia, which can damage tint film.
- Bore water and sprinklers. The minerals leave water spots that etch in quickly in the heat.
How do you look after a ceramic coated car?
A ceramic coating makes washing easier, but it still needs washing. Follow the aftercare you're given at handover. As a general guide:
- Give the coating time to cure before the first wash. Your aftercare sheet will tell you how long.
- Use a pH-neutral shampoo. Harsh or high-alkaline cleaners wear coatings faster.
- You don't need to wax it. Wax sits on top of the coating and hides its water-beading behaviour.
- Book a decontamination wash every so often to clear out bonded fallout the coating can't shed on its own.

How do you keep the interior clean between details?
- Vacuum every couple of weeks. Sand and grit wear carpet fibres the same way they wear paint.
- Protect the dash from UV. A sunshade and a UV protectant help stop dashboards fading and cracking in the Queensland sun.
- Deal with spills straight away. Blot, don't rub, then wipe with a damp microfibre.
- Condition leather every few months. Heat dries it out, and dry leather cracks.
How often should you get your car professionally detailed in Brisbane?
For most daily drivers, a full detail every three to six months keeps the car in good shape, with regular washes in between. Paint correction is only needed when swirls and scratches build up. Every correction removes a little clear coat, so it shouldn't be done more often than necessary.

Common questions
How often should I get my car detailed in Brisbane?
For most daily drivers, a full detail every three to six months, with a wash every one to two weeks in between. Cars parked outdoors or near the coast may need it more often.
Can I take a ceramic coated car through an automatic car wash?
We don't recommend it. Brush car washes cause swirl marks on any paint, coated or not. A hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo is the safest option.
How do I remove bird or bat droppings from my car?
As soon as possible. Soften the dropping with a damp microfibre and quick detailer for a minute, then lift it off gently. Don't scrub it dry, and don't leave it in the sun.
Do I need to wax a ceramic coated car?
No. Wax sits on top of the coating and masks its water-beading effect. A pH-neutral wash and the occasional topper spray recommended in your aftercare are all it needs.
Do you come to me for a detail?
Yes. Prestige is a mobile service across North Brisbane, so Mitchell comes to your home or workplace. Skygloss is the one exception, applied at our Mount Samson studio.
